Sporadic high mortalities were reported in June 1997 among hatchery-reared larval Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in a French commercial hatchery. Cellular abnormalities were observed in semi-thin sections in affected animals. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of herpes-like virus particles in larvae. This is the first description of a herpes-like virus infection in larval R. philippinarum, a non-ostreid bivalve species. Virus particles were similar to other herpes-like viruses described from different oyster species with respect to ultrastructure and morphogenesis. Electron microscopic examination also demonstrated cells with condensed chromatin and extensive perinuclear fragmentation of chromatin. Like viruses infecting oysters,... |

The influence of salinity and water chemistry on Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios in the aragonitic shells of the Manila clam were investigated. Clams were reared at constant temperature (20 °C) under different controlled conditions of salinity, commonly encountered in their natural habitat. Clams were held in three tanks with a constant salinity of 35 for the first 35 days and then two tanks were changed to lower salinities (20 and 28) for the next 29 days. Individual shell Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios were studied through time. Despite stable conditions (temperature, salinity, and Mg/Cawater) for clams reared at salinity 35 during the experiment, Mg/Ca shell ratios increased through the time. Moreover the salinity decrease at t35 slowed the increase of... |

In 1972, France underwent an oyster (Crassostrea angulata) crisis and urgently needed to diversify its aquaculture. Thus, Asari clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) was introduced at that time for aquaculture purpose, concomitantly with the introduction of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). All Asari clam adults and spat originated from the same area (Puget Sound, WA, USA). After a promising start and the implementation of a national Research & Development program, Asari clam culture rapidly faced a series of concomitant handicaps: firstly, in spite the fact that cultural practices were optimized and locking points addressed, leasing ground availability was limited during the 1980s’ due to certain reluctance from oyster farmers to share their leases and/or... |

We describe an emerging pathology, brown muscle disease (BMD), which specifically affects the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Arcachon Bay (France). BMD induces a transformation of the posterior adductor muscle, which becomes infused by conchiolin and calcified, reducing the ability of clams to bury. The disease affects both types of muscular tissue, with striated muscle becoming affected to a higher degree than smooth muscle. Two indices were created to quantify the symptoms: the Muscle Print Index, used for empty and live shells, and the Final Disease Index, utilized for live clams only. Histological sections were made and observed under light microscopy to examine the muscular damage and to investigate a causal agent. Sections revealed an... |

Between 1980 and 1986, some Arcachon oyster farmers took up breeding the Japanese clam on the foreshore (Robert et Deltreil, 1990). This production was short lived. The steep fall in prices due to economic competition from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia, predator action such as the trigger fish (Popovsky et al., 1999), added to the significant amount of mortality that occurred in the summer and autumn of 1992 that affected two-thirds of the total stock, led to clam farming being abandoned at the end of the 1980s. In the Arcachon basin, the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population, now natural to the area, has found favourable conditions for development and is expanding rapidly there. This species has been supplanting the local species... |

Perkinsosis is one of the most widespread diseases affecting commercially important species of molluscs globally. We examined the impact of Perkinsus spp. on shell growth at the individual scale in 2 clam species: Ruditapes decussatus from Mundaka Estuary (Spain) and R. philippinarum from Arcachon Bay (France). At Arcachon, 2 contrasting sites in terms of environment and Perkinsus olseni presence were chosen: Arguin (disease-free) and Ile aux Oiseaux (infected site). We monitored the dynamics of perkinsosis over the course of the experiment at Mundaka and Ile aux Oiseaux. Prevalences were high (>70%), and intensities were around 10(5) cells g(-1) wet gills at Ile aux Oiseaux, and 10(6) cells g(-1) at Mundaka. No significant differences in prevalence or... |

For a few years, we have witnessed the rapid development of Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams & Reeve) culture on the Atlantic coast, and especially in the Charente Maritime region. However, a number of unknown variables still exist in order to optimize oyster farms and improve their benefits. In this respect, studies have been carried out since 1975 by the Centre Océanologique de Bretagne in Tudy Island, in the Kermoor pond, in order to determine: the consequence of the immersion size on their growth, the optimal seeding period, and the survival rate. Moreover, other studies aimed to significantly reduce the production cost, focused on pre-growth length. These studies correspond to a specific environment (i.e. the semi-closed Kermoor pond).... |

Spatial changes in the dietary regime of Ruditapes philippinarum from intertidal sediments of Arcachon Bay were depicted by analyzing stable isotope ratios in both its adductor muscles and potential trophic sources. Manila clams were collected from 50 sites in May to June 2006. Dietary reconstruction was based on the IsoSource mixing model, considering trophic enrichments of 3.5%. for carbon and 3.0%. for nitrogen, which were determined experimentally. delta C-13 and delta N-15 values, respectively, averaged -28.2 and 5.2 parts per thousand for riverine particulate organic matter (POM), -20.6 and 4.7 parts per thousand for inner bay phytoplankton, -21.0 and 5.6%. for outer bay phytoplankton, -16.8 and 4.8 parts per thousand. for microphytobenthos, -18.4... |

Electronic decision-support tools are now an essential component of government strate gies to battle non-native species, with taxon-specific, paper-based risk analysis schemes often being replaced by taxon-generic tools. This study reports on the development of a decision-support tool for aquatic species, the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), which replaces five taxon-specific toolkits for amphibians, freshwater and marine fish and invertebrates (FISK, MFISK, FI-ISK, MI-ISK, Amph-ISK). Adapted from Pheloung et al.’s. Weed Risk Assessment (WRA), the “-ISK” toolkits were also “self-automated workbooks” in Excel® VisualBasic® architecture of the ’WRA. In creating AS-ISK, we incorporated the conceptual approach (questions and guidance) of... |

Since 1984, experiments have been carried out on clam Ruditapes philippinarum foreshore culture, with a one year pond pre-growth. Culture conditions are now well-known: population level with a tide coefficient of around 70 to 80, sediment of silty or fine grain size, sediment stability over the culture period-between the end of April and November. This culture possibility gives way to a diversification of production in the shellfish culture basin of Marennes-Oléron and can be used as an alternative to oyster overexploitation. Clam densities (2 kg/m²) are five times lower than oyster and the Ruditapes philippinarum filtration rate is 20% lower than that of Crassostrea gigas. |
